American ginseng slices contain saponins, volatile oils, proteins, amino acids, polysaccharides, nucleic acids, peptides, vitamins and trace elements.
Consumption Methods
Soaking‑in‑water method: The optimal way to consume American ginseng is to slice it. It can be brewed with water on its own, or decocted separately and mixed with other medicinal herbs. The daily intake is generally limited to within 10 grams. American
ginseng slices are especially suitable for people such as teachers who need to speak for long hours and tend to consume qi, resulting in shortness of breath and fatigue. It can refresh the mind and improve vocal condition.
Decoction method: Slice American ginseng, take 3 grams and put it in a sand pot, add an appropriate amount of water, and simmer gently for about 10 minutes. Consume the ginseng slices together with the decoction on an empty stomach before breakfast.
Stewing‑in‑water‑bath method: Slice American ginseng, take 2‑5 grams daily and place in a porcelain bowl. Add proper water to soak for 3‑5 hours, cover the bowl, then place the bowl in a pot and steam‑stew in water bath for 20‑30 minutes. Take it half
an hour before breakfast.
Steaming method: Dry American ginseng over low heat and grind into fine powder. Take 5 grams each time, mix with one egg, and steam until cooked.
Chewing‑and‑holding method: Steam American ginseng in a sand pot to soften it, then slice it. Place the slices in a clean small glass or porcelain bottle. Hold 2‑4 slices in the mouth before breakfast and after dinner every day, chew thoroughly and swallow.
Powder‑infusion method: Dry American ginseng over low heat and grind into fine powder. Take 5 grams and put in a cup, add a little honey, pour in boiling water, cover and steep for 5 minutes. It can be taken in several portions, preferably on an empty
stomach.

Chicken‑stewing method: Remove internal organs and clean an old hen. Stuff 50 grams of American ginseng into the chicken belly, sew up the belly with thread. Add water to submerge the chicken without salt. Bring to boil over high heat first, then simmer
over low heat until chicken is tender, leaving two‑thirds of the soup. Eat a small bowl of chicken and soup every day.
In addition, please note: Do not drink tea, coffee or eat radish while taking American ginseng, so as not to reduce its efficacy.
Efficacy Characteristics
American ginseng contains various ginsenosides, volatile oils, sterols, polysaccharides, as well as vitamins, amino acids and trace elements. It has sedative and anti‑inflammatory effects, can enhance memory, improve myocardial ischaemia, lower blood
lipids, inhibit platelet aggregation, and boost immune function.
It can be seen that American ginseng is most suitable for patients with deficiency of both qi and yin accompanied by heat. Its unique feature is that it is neither hot nor dry. People who are not suitable for ginseng therapy and hot tonification can use
American ginseng instead. However, it is not suitable for people with yang‑deficiency constitution, such as cold‑aversion, cold limbs, diarrhoea, cold‑dampness in the stomach, spleen‑yang weakness, and greasy and turbid tongue coating.

Contraindications for Use
The main component of American ginseng slices is American ginseng. Although American ginseng has unique pharmacological effects, traditional Chinese medicine holds that "all medicines have some toxicity". Therefore, American ginseng has certain
contraindications and matters needing attention:
1. Do not drink strong tea while taking it. Tea contains large amounts of tannic acid which will destroy the active ingredients of American ginseng. You may drink tea 2‑3 days after taking American ginseng. It is also better to avoid coffee, as coffee
also affects the efficacy of American ginseng.
2. Do not take it together with radish. American ginseng tonifies qi, while white radish dissipates qi (clearing heat, detoxifying and cooling). The two foods are contradictory. From a nutritional perspective, they cannot be eaten together. From the perspective
of TCM pharmacology, white radish is incompatible with many tonics. Eating white radish when ill may aggravate conditions, such as colds or blisters.
3. Watch out for adverse reactions: Some people may experience cold‑aversion, lowered body temperature, poor appetite, abdominal pain and diarrhoea after taking American ginseng. Some may have dysmenorrhoea and delayed menstruation. Others may develop
allergic reactions with scattered blisters of varying sizes on upper and lower limbs and severe itching. The blisters will subside spontaneously after stopping medication.
4. In traditional Chinese medicine, American ginseng is a cool‑natured medicine, suitable for tonifying qi and nourishing yin. If you have heat symptoms such as dry mouth and restlessness, hot palms and soles, flushed face and constant fatigue, American
ginseng tonics can help conditioning. On the contrary, avoid taking American ginseng if you have productive cough, excessive saliva or oedema, otherwise symptoms will worsen. Besides, "Do not tonify when there is no deficiency". Do not take
American ginseng slices frequently if you have no physical discomfort.
5. American ginseng is not suitable for damp‑syndrome. Consider seasonal factors when taking it. Dry autumn and winter are suitable for taking American ginseng instead of ginseng or red ginseng; spring and summer are more suitable for ginseng.
6. American ginseng contains ginsenosides which can boost human resistance. Therefore, people with weak physical condition such as the elderly and seriously‑ill patients can take American ginseng regularly to improve physical fitness. For patients with
chronic diseases such as chronic hepatitis B, taking American ginseng helps control and improve conditions. For people with intestinal‑heat haematochezia, according to Lei Ju Yao Fang, steaming American ginseng together with longan flesh can clear
intestines and stop bleeding.
